AUGUSTA, Ga., -- Why sell a business book about PowerPoint for 99 cents on Amazons Kindle store? Why not? The economics of this experiment are compelling, states Ron Galloway, publisher of Rethinking PowerPoint: Delivering & Designing Presentations That Engage The Mind. The Kindle version of the book is priced at 99 cents through May 30, at will point the price will be reset.
Authors such as Joe Konrath and Seth Godin, with his Domino Project, are pioneering new pricing models for ebooks, Galloway states. No one is really sure what price points will work in a publishing environment so dynamic, but at Method we decided to give it a try with this book because the topic, PowerPoint, is so universal.
Why a project about PowerPoint? "In the last 3 years Ive done about 250 speeches at business conferences, which means Ive been exposed to a lot of other peoples PowerPoint presentations, probably well over 1,000. I started to notice common mistakes in the design and presentation of peoples slides, as well as mistakes in my own presentations. As I improved my slides there was a noticeable improvement in audience response, as measured by my evaluations."
So Galloway, director of the controversial film Why Wal-Mart Works, set out to interview the leading experts in slide design to try and figure out "Why PowerPoint Doesnt Work." His yearlong journey led him to film interviews with thought leaders such as Peter Norvig, head of research at Google, and Nancy Duarte, who designed Al Gores slides for An Inconvenient Truth.
Other participants in the film include Michael Alley, Nigel Holmes, Steven Kosslyn, Carmen Taran, Andrew Abela, Dave Paradi, Carmen Gallo, Lesa Snider, Rick Altman, Rich Harrington, Connie Malamed, and former project head of PowerPoint at Microsoft, Ric Bretschneider.
