EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA Minneapolis Orthodontics Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth is participating in the Toys for Tots program for the third straight year.
Eisenhuths patients have been asked to bring in new, unwrapped toys to donate to the charity, and those who donate will be entered into a drawing to become the Eagan and Minneapolis orthodontist practices official spokesperson on Dec. 10 when the toys are delivered to the KARE 11 television station during the afternoon newscast.
Were trying to give our young patients more opportunities to be involved in community events, said Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis, MN braces expert.
The winning patient who gets to be the spokesperson will be picked up in a party bus or limousine and taken to the television station to deliver the toys. He or she will get to be interviewed on-air and tell how many toys were collected and how the office went about collecting them.
The patients seem really excited about the opportunity, Eisenhuth said. Our toy box is almost full and we have about 30 names in our drawing jar so far.
All patients who donate a toy receive a token, which is part of Eisenhuths ongoing reward program in her office. Patients collect the tokens and can cash them in for items such as gift cards.
Eisenhuth is pleased with the participation so far.
Our patients have been very generous and for that, we are grateful, she said. This will be a tough holiday season for some families this year, so were trying to do our best to help as many families as we can with our donations.
Anyone interested in donating toys to Toys for Tots can drop them off at Eisenhuths Eagan office location between now and Dec. 10 at noon.
Toys for tots Began in 1947, when Maj. Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Los Angeles Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 new and refurbished toys to underprivileged children.
Since 1980, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys. This is due to changes in the 1970s that prevented Marine Reservists from having time during drill weekends to refurbish used toys. Hand me down toys also didnt send the message the Marines wanted to send to children in need, according to the organizations Web site (http://www.toysfortots.org/about_toys_for_tots/toys_for_tots_program/origin_and_evolution.asp).
The goal is to deliver a message of hope, which will assist in building self-esteem and, in turn, motivate less fortunate children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders, the site stated. A shiny, new toy is the best means of accomplishing this goal.
