Detroit, MI Stanley Shelton, co owner of J&S Portrait America in Wayne Michigan, recently spoke at a workshop for people considering going into business for themselves. Successful business owners were present to answer questions and offer advice based on their business experience.
Stanley, a professional photographer spoke about the skills required to be a successful wedding photographer according to his experience. It is essential that I develop a good relationship with my client well before the event so that I understand exactly what they want in a wedding photo album. Once I arrive at the scene I consider myself Stan the Invisible Photo Man. This is often a hectic time for two families; I need to be sure all my questions are answered ahead of time so I can capture the special moments for the couple and their families. The last thing I want to do is disappoint the bride and groom.
Stanley explained how things dont always go as smoothly as one would like. I have to follow the wedding party to several locations, often beginning at the brides home for pre-ceremony shots. We go from there to the wedding ceremony and then proceed to the place where the reception is held. It is important that I am able to arrive on time, unpack equipment and be ready; then, I have to pack it back up to get to the next scene and be ready for more photos. Organization is very important.
Stanley talked about keeping up with new styles and techniques; Wedding Photojournalism is the art of presenting a story through the use of pictures. Unlike traditional or classic wedding photography, where photos are posed, wedding photojournalism documents the wedding day with a narrative collection of photos. The photographer must be able to scan a scene and know when and where things are going to happen and be focused on capturing the essence and emotions of the day.
