San Francisco offers a smorgasbord of delights this week for lovers of concerts and theater - highlights include Idina Menzel, Paul McCartney, Zane Lamprey, Wicked, Young Frankenstein and Peter Pan.
Idina Menzel, who performs at the Davies Symphony Hall on 9th July, won a Tony for Best Actress for her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the original production of Wicked on Broadway (she originated the role in 2003 in San Francisco before Wickeds Broadway run). Following Wicked, Menzel appeared off-Broadway in See What I Wanna See, for which she received Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award nominations. She also appeared Off-Broadway in The Wild Party. She went on to reprise her role as Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked at Londons Apollo Victoria Theater in 2006.
Paul McCartney, now 68 years old and a grandfather, is entertaining a whole new generation of music fans - as well as legions of Beatles and Wings followers - as he tours with his four-piece band. They appear at AT&T Park on 10th July, and this will mark the first time McCartney has played in San Francisco since Aug. 29, 1966, when the Beatles performed their final public concert at Candlestick Park. The performance is expected to include Beatles classics such as "All My Loving", "The Long and Winding Road", "Blackbird" and "Eleanor Rigby", as well as Wings favourites such as "Jet", "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five", "My Love", and of course "Band on the Run".
Comedian Zane Lamprey brings his "Drinking Made Easy" live show to The Fillmore on 15th July. The performers are expected include Marc Ryan (Three Sheets: Las Vegas) and Steve McKenna (a fixture of the Three Sheets television show).
Every night of the week, large-scale theater performances include Wicked at the Orpheum Theatre and Young Frankenstein at the Golden Gate Theatre. You can also see Peter Pan at The Threesixty Theatre at Ferry Park on 7th, 10th, 11th and 15th July.
In sports you can see the Giants play the New York Mets at AT&T Park on 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th July.
