New York is a great city to be in this week for concert-lovers, with a number of highlights including Lady Gaga, Ringo Starr, and Iron Maiden. Theater and sports fans will also be delighted.
Lady Gaga, who plays at Madison Square Garden on 6th, 7th and 9th July, is expected to perform many of her most popular numbers such as "Just Dance", "Love Game", "Poker Face", "Paparazzi", "Bad Romance", and "Speechless". She has has just achieved 4th place in the Forbes magazine annual Worlds Most Powerful Celebrities list. She landed there thanks to high marks for her Web visibility (#1 on the list) and a $62 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010, $31 million of which came from touring (after a gross of $95 million).
Ringo Starr, who turns 70 this week, brings his All Starr Band - Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Gary Wright, Wally Palmar of the Romantics, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, plus Gregg Bissonette on drums - to the Radio City Music Hall on 7th July. The set is expected to include not only a number of famous Beatles songs, but also some of Ringos solo hits and some of the best known tunes by the All Starr Band members.
Iron Maidens Final Frontier Tour comes to Madison Square Garden on 12th July. Their performance is expected to include classics such as Fear of the Dark, Number of the Beast, Running Free and Hallowed Be Thy Name.
Every night of the week, large-scale theater performances include Blue Man Group at the Astor Place Theatre, Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre, Jersey Boys at the Virginia/August Wilson Theatre, Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre, American Idiot at the St James Theatre, Phantom Of The Opera at the Majestic Theatre, West Side Story at the Palace Theatre, and South Pacific at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center.
Sherie Rene Scott stars in Everyday Rapture every night at the American Airlines Theatre. Ben Brantley of the New York Times said of this show, "I cant think of another production in recent years that captures and explains so affectingly the essence and allure of musicals, and why theyre such an indispensable part of the New York landscape".
Every night at the Barrymore Theatre you can see David Mamets terse moral fable of pride and prejudice "Race", with Eddie Izzard newly in the role of the Mephistophelean lawyer Jack Lawson.
In sports you can see the New York Mets play the Cincinnati Reds on 5th, 6th and 7th July, and also see them play the Atlanta Braves on 9th, 10th and 11th July. All games are at Citi Field, Flushing.
In minor league baseball you can catch the Staten Island Yankees versus the Tri-city Valleycats on 8th and 10th July, and versus the Batavia Muckdogs on 11th July, at Richmond County Ballpark. You can also watch the Brooklyn Cyclones against the State College Spikes at MCU Park, Brooklyn, on 10th July.
