A news study on diabetes states that Schools play important role in lowering childrens risk of type diabetes. This can be happened if the schools can include healthier food, more vigorous PE lesson and give more education on Health.
In UK 1 in 7 children are overweight and this number is on the rise because of the sedentary or stagnated life style of the people these days. Obesity is a serious problem it leads to heart disease, blood pressure rise and also diabetes. Here the childhood obesity can be reduced if schools give priority to health and health awareness tips. Obesity is the one of the main causes of diabetes.
At new study done on schools in US. 4,600 children were part of the study in 42 schools. Among them 21 were instructed to provide students with healthier food and drink, vigorous exercises and education promoting healthy behavior. The remaining schools were not instructed to make any changes. This study was done for a period of three years. The result of this study was children were 21 percent less likely to become obese in schools with proper priority for health. The children were at lower risk of having diabetes, their bodies were fit and normal and their was lower levels of glucose in the blood.
Children who were overweight did better if they took part in diabetes prevention programs. The researchers found there was no overall difference between the schools in their percentages of overweight or obese pupils. Both the schools groups had almost equal number of obese people. This result was only explained as children followed weight loss programs at houses or schools providing their own programs to improve students in health.
The study was primarily done on in US and mostly on black, Hispanic and low income students who all have higher risk for diabetes in the US. So the result cant be certain and be similar in other groups of students. Funds for the study were granted by US National Institutes of health and ADA. The study was published in New England Journal of Medicine, which is owned by the Massachusetts Medical Society.
This study is helpful as school based programs focused on diet, exercise, and health education which decrease risk factors for diabetes such as obesity. If children are overweight and obese they need to take low fat diet and do regular exercise.
