Migaloo, the famous white humpback, has strangly been missed on his journey up the East Coast of Australia this year. Migaloo, meaning "white fella", is usually followed eagerly on his annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland. But this year he has been a bit shy. Eager whale watchers have not spotted him from all the usual vantage points. However he has been spotted recently by a local dive boat offshore from Cairns, in the company of a large female humpback.
Migaloo, the worlds only confirmed white whale, is approximately 17 years old. He is considered a "sprecial interest whale" and larger exclusion zones apply for him, than the usual humpbacks.
The area has a fledgling whale watching industry, however many sightings are reported from everyday reef cruises departing from Cairns. Its not just Humpback whales which are being seen. Many sightings of Minke and Dwarf Minke whales are often reported in the areas whale watching season which traditionally runs from late june to early september.
The Humpbacks generally use the warm sheltered waters of The Great Barrier Reef for mating and calving. Whilst on this visit the whales do not eat, relying on reserves of body fat for this massive journey.
